Importance of Wearing Waders when Surf Fishing

Waders can be extremely helpful when surf fishing. If you’re fishing colder waters, a pair of waders will keep you warm while you fish. They also keep you dry, helping with overall fatigue and letting you fish all day without getting as tired.

A good pair of waders will also protect you from a few animals in the surf. Jellyfish namely have pretty painful stings, sometimes even breaking up into pieces that still sting. Wearing waders will protect you from dealing with those stings when you walk out to cast a line.

Waders can be equally helpful when surf fishing off of jetties. Some waders have anti-slip soles on their boots, meaning you won’t slip on the wet rocks as easily. Others have reinforced knees and shins that can protect you from some injuries falling on the rocks.

Things to Consider When Choosing Waders for Surf Fishing

When you’re picking waders for surf fishing, you need to consider a few things. You’ll most likely want chest waders since they’ll let you walk out farther to cast directly to schools coming down the beach. On rough surf days, you won’t be walking out in waders since you’ll just fill them up taking waves over the top, but they’ll still keep you dry on the shoreline when waves break on the shore.

Insulated waders are great if you plan on fishing cold waters. The problem is that you can easily overheat in these if you’re fishing in warm climates. Think about the time of year you’re fishing and the average temperatures before buying.

You need to consider the materials the waders are made of, what style waders you want, and how well those waders will fit when buying. This will let you get the right pair for you and avoid mistakes that can cost you money or make your fishing trip miserable.

1) Material

Wader material is very important. Most of the time, waders are made of rubber, neoprene, polyester, or a mixture of them.

Rubber is the heaviest and most easy to overheat in. You’ll want to look at wader’s uppers made mostly of polyester or neoprene depending on the temperature of water you’ll be wading in. Neoprene holds much more heat and is less breathable, while polyester is not as warm.

Both are durable materials. Don’t shy away from mixtures, like a wader having neoprene boots or rubber soles. Focus more on the uppers for comfort, and the boot material for durability.

2) Style

Waders are available in a variety of styles, but the most common two are waist and chest height waders. They come up to their specific part of your body, with everything lower being protected.

For surf fishing, chest-high waders are a better option since you can go further into the water top cast in front of schools of fish or get extra cast distance. If you plan to exclusively cast from the shoreline though, you can get away with waist-high waders.

Regardless of style, remember that on rougher surf days it’ll be easy to take a wave over the top of the waders and fill them with water. Be sure to wade in calm water or be wary of the water depth you’re treading through.

3) Fit

The most important thing to consider about buying waders is the fit. You need to be comfortable since you’ll likely be spending a full day wearing them.

Try to get waders with adjustable belts and shoulder straps. This will help with how tight the straps are, but the best thing to do is try on waders before buying. Make sure you have plenty of room in there, they aren’t too tight and walk around to make sure they move and bend with you properly.

4) Boot foot vs Stocking Foot

Boot-fit waders have a boot attached to the bottom of the pant leg, letting you put on the waders and start fishing. The boots are normally rubber or neoprene but can be prone to leaks around the attachment points. Boot fit waders are also usually less flexible around the ankles, making walking on sand and rocks more difficult.

Stockingfoot waders have a sock attached to the pant leg, normally made of neoprene, that you slide your foot into. You then will need a pair of wading shoes to get protection and traction for your feet. They’re generally more comfortable thanks to their flexibility and your ability to choose a comfortable shoe.

Which of the two is better is a personal decision. Some fishermen will prefer boot foot waders, while others enjoy the stocking foot. You should get the one you’re used to, or at the least try both kinds on and see which you like better before buying.
