What To Look For When Buying Wahoo Trolling Lures

Durability

Wahoo strikes incredibly hard. They can swim at up to 60 miles per hour, and in many cases, you’ll be trolling over 15 miles per hour. That’s a ton of force on each strike, and not every lure can hold up against it. So make sure to get a wahoo lure that is durable enough to take a few hits and still run straight and not fall apart.

Colors

Some of the best colors for wahoo are blue and purple lures since those colors most resemble their natural prey. However, brightly colored wahoo lures in pink, purple, white, lime green, and any crazy combination you can think of are also incredibly effective. If you aren’t getting bites on typical colors, don’t be afraid to switch it up. Crazy colors won’t scare off wahoo and sometimes will catch fish when all other methods fail.

Attraction

The point of a wahoo lure is to attract and entice fish to bite, but not all of them do as well as others. Look for large skirts that will put a ton of motion in the water, wahoo lures that leave big bubble trails or have rattles to bring fish up, and lures that mimic wahoo’s natural prey fish. Wahoo love to feed on Bonita and small tuna, so lures that mimic their work well.

Questions & Answers

Where is the best wahoo fishing?

Wahoos are a popular fish on both coasts of the US. They can be found from New Jersey down to the Bahamas and into the Caribbean, frequenting warmer currents. In the Gulf of Mexico, they’re commonly found around deepwater oil rigs where prey is plentiful. In addition, they’re frequently found around Hawaii and Central America in the Pacific, sometimes venturing as far North as California.

How do you rig a wahoo lure?

You’ll want to run a six-foot section of heavy braided wire (480 pounds works well) through your lure to the hooks or attached to the lure. Thanks to the wahoo’s sharp teeth, you need the wire as monofilament will get cut off. Use 8/0 to 11/0 hooks for targeting wahoo, preferably non-stainless steel. You can use planers, weights, or downriggers to keep your lure at depth when needed.

How fast does a wahoo swim?

Wahoo can swim up to 60 miles per hour. Therefore, they have no problem tasking baits being trolled at 20 miles per hour. In fact, over time, it seems faster trolling has produced more fish. Make sure to set your drag around 30 pounds to keep enough pressure on the fish to keep it from getting spooled.
