One of the essential pieces of gear when it comes to fishing is the line you choose. Braided line, for example, is a favorite of many anglers thanks to its smaller diameter, higher sensitivity because it doesn’t stretch, and lack of line memory. They are thin and coated with a layer that helps increase their casting distance.

You’ll want to look for lines that have high abrasion resistance, perfect color for the fishing you plan on doing, and have robust material construction.

There are many lines to choose from and figuring out which one is best for you can be tricky. So we’ve put this list of best fishing lines together to help you make a knowledgeable decision when buying your next fishing line.

Line Specs

Spectra fibers are one of the strongest and most popular fibers used in fishing lines. PowerPro is made of eight woven spectra fibers and then coated with an EBT coating process. As a result, the lines are incredibly smooth and nearly frictionless on your spool and guides, making casting long distances much easier.

The dense weave of the fibers and the coating contributes to the line being very abrasive resistant compared to other lines. You won’t have trouble pulling your line through heavy grass or other covers. While tough, the smoothness and small diameter of the line cut down on air and water resistance, allowing the line to cut through both smoothly while not losing any of the sensitivity this fishing line is known for.

Some cheap fishing lines dig into reels and scratch because they aren’t coated or woven correctly. This isn’t the case with SpiderWire. The lines are woven Dyneema polyethylene fibers and are made to be durable.

Aside from the high quality at a low price, the biggest standout for SpiderWire is their variety of camos in the Stealth line and how quiet the lines are in the water. In addition, they have high visibility lines, such as neon yellow. However, most line camos are made to match a specific water color. Unlike the other best fishing lines, this one has integrated fibers that increase the strength of your knots. It also doesn’t use the waxy coating other lines do but retains a low level of friction to let it slip through guides and off your spool smoothly. Compared to other lines of the same weight class, it has a smaller diameter, so you can fit more lines on your reel and get superior casting distance.

Things To Consider When Choosing The Best Fishing Line

Diameter

In most cases, your reel will have two sections for capacities. One is for a monofilament line, and one is for a braided line. It shows how many yards of line at a certain weight can fit on your reel without overloading it. Braided fishing line has a thinner diameter than monofilament lines at the same weight. This means on any reel. You can fit more braided lines on your spool in yardage or use a heavier line at the same yardage.

Casting Distance

A fishing line has the advantage when casting, thanks to its thin diameter. The lines create less air resistance, allowing them to cut through the air and travel farther. They are also generally coated in a slick material that reduces friction on the spool, rod guides, and the air. All of these contribute to a smoother cast and increased distance.

Sensitivity

A fishing line that does not have a lot of stretch in them reduces the shock resistance of the lines, making them incredibly sensitive. With just a finger touching a taut line, you can feel the slightest touch or tap anywhere along the line.

Out of the different types of lines, braided lines are much more sensitive. So it’s beneficial when fishing on the bottom and keeping fish from diving into cover. It can also help when you need to feel a bite fishing in heavy vegetation.

Abrasion Resistance

There is a debate among fishers about which type of fishing line is better for abrasion resistance. Braided lines do not stretch. When it slices against teeth or a sharp rock, the tension causes it to break most of the time. They do have decent abrasion resistance, though, when it comes to rubbing against structures. If it isn’t sliced through, the fibers hold well and don’t have issues with breaking.

Durability

Look for the best fishing line that has a long shelf life and is plenty workable. Lines that don’t retain the shape you store them in and doesn’t try to curl back up like it was on the spool are generally more durable. Also, the best fishing lines that are typically hydrophobic don’t easily break down from the water, making it last a long time.

Tips When Using A Fishing Line

Spooling

When spooling braid, it’s important to remember that fishing lines can get very hot and even cut your fingers if moving at high speeds. Therefore, you’ll typically want a towel or other cloth to help protect your fingers.

Many reels now come “braid ready.” What this means is that the reel has a rubber ring that gives your line something to grip onto. Braids can slip easily, and on older reels, you may need to use a layer or two of monofilament backing to make sure the braid grips the reel.

Keep tension on the line to make sure your braid is spooled tightly and evenly on the reel. You want to move slowly back and forth on conventional reels and avoid amassing humps of line on other reels. This can help you avoid tangles while casting or when a fish is running off a bunch of lines.

Line Size vs Lure Weight

The thinner your line, the easier it will cast through the air. For lures under an ounce, a twenty-pound braid is the biggest you’ll want to go, and it will usually cast the farthest. For Lures over one ounce, thirty to forty-pound braid will cast fine. Remember to check your rod for lure and line weight recommendations to get the most cast distance out of your setup.

Tie Proper Knots

Braid can be hard to tie knots with. However, it can come undone easier than monofilament because it doesn’t dig in and grip itself. The Palomar knot is the best knot for fishing lines, as it is one of the few lines that allow you to get the full tensile strength of your line at your knot point.

It’s crucial to tie proper knots when using a fishing line. If your line fails, most of the time, it fails at the knot, not anywhere in your mainline.

Line Conditioner

Line conditioner has a few essential functions. You can get away without using it. However, it will improve both the life of your line and your fishing techniques. Line conditioner makes your line smoother, helping you to spool it effectively and making it smoother to cast.

It can help reduce casting noise for the times you want to be stealthy. In freezing conditions, a line conditioner can even keep your line from freezing to itself on your spool.

Questions & Answers

How often do fishing lines need to be replaced?

You’ll want to replace and re-spool your reel once a year. If you notice your braid is fraying or damaged, you’ll want to cut off above the damaged section of the line. If your line is damaged throughout, then go ahead and change it out early.

What is the best fishing line?

It’s a personal preference when using braid, monofilament, or fluorocarbon line. Braided lines are famous for some types of fishing, like bottom fishing reefs over mono, because of their sensitivity. However, they are no better or worse than other lines, as each has pros and cons for different fishing techniques.

What is the best fishing line for salt and fresh water?

Spider-Wire works well in both fresh and saltwater. Bass anglers tend to go for heavy lines around 50-pound tests when fishing rich vegetation. For surf fishing, you’ll want to use at least a thirty-pound test due to the extreme force of long-distance casting and the size of fish you can readily catch. When fishing large saltwater fish, anglers typically use a monofilament or fluorocarbon leader to add some shock resistance to their lines.

What knot is suitable for fishing lines?

The best knot to use with fishing lines is the Palomar knot. It’s one of the few knots that allow you to get the full tensile strength out of your fishing line at the knot. To tie a Palomar knot, follow these instructions.

  1. Double about 6 inches of line and pass through the eye of the hook.
  2. Tie a simple overhand knot in the doubled line, letting the hook hang loose. Avoid twisting the lines.
  3. Pull the end of the loop down, passing it completely over the hook.
  4. Moisten and pull both ends of the line to draw up the knot.
  5. Trim excess.
